Nigerian Afrobeats singer and songwriter Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa, popularly known as Joeboy, has thrown his weight behind the organisers’ decision to award a Grammy to South African singer Tyla over his own compatriots.

The ‘Low Key’ crooner backed the decision during a candid interview with Jay On-Air.

In early February, Tyla won the Best African Music Performance category at the 2026 Grammy Awards with her hit song ‘Push 2 Start’, beating out Nigerian artistes such as Davido, Omah Lay, Wizkid, Ayra Starr, and Burna Boy.

The outcome generated mixed reactions and heated arguments on social media, with many Nigerians alleging that their countrymen had been “robbed”.

Reacting to the controversy, Joeboy stated that, contrary to claims that Tyla did not deserve the award, she had thoroughly merited it.

While he noted that he was personally rooting for Davido to win, he insisted that the South African singer was a worthy winner.

“Personally, I was rooting for Davido to win the Best African Music Performance category at the 2026 Grammys, but you can’t take it away from Tyla. She is an amazing artist whether you accept it or not. She really put in the work.

“People can be angry all they want but she deserved the Grammy win. I can’t fault her triumph,” he said.

Joeboy concluded by praising Tyla’s talent and work ethic, naming her as one of the artistes he would like to collaborate with in the future.
