The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has issued an advisory to Nigerians living in South Africa ahead of the semi-final clash of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire between Nigeria and South Africa.

Both teams will renew rivalry on Wednesday as the Bafana Bafana seek revenge.

Nigeria and South Africa last met in the semi-finals at AFCON in 2000, with the Super Eagles running out 2-0 winners thanks to a brace from Tijani Babangida.

The advisory dated February 6, 2024 instructed Nigerians in South Africa to be of good conduct before, during and after the match.

The commission in Pretoria said it was aware of inflammatory remarks made online by some South Africans.

“In this regard, the High Commission hereby advises the Nigerian community to be watchful of their utterances, be mindful of where they choose to watch the match especially in public places, and refrain from engaging in loud, riotous or provocative celebrations should the Super Eagles win the match,” the advisory read.

The commission added that should the provocations arise, they should not be reciprocated but reported to the appropriate authorities.

The advisory is not unconnected with the recent history of South Africans attacking nationals of other African countries in incidents blamed on xenophobia.
