Health workers threaten strike in Kwara

-

The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) and the Assembly of health care providers in Ilorin said on Tuesday that they would resume their suspended strike after the next 13 days.

The statement was jointly signed by Dr Bayo Akintola, the President-General, the Senior Staff Association of University Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions (SSAUTHRAI) and 10 other health workers associations.

The statement said that members would begin an indefinite strike and total withdrawal of services from 8 a.m. on May 19, if the Federal Government failed to release appropriate circulars to effect all the negotiated issues.

It identified the alleged lopsided and unlawful constitution of board of management in various tertiary health institutions coupled with non-invitation of members of JOHESU to the board as part of the grievances.

It also cited the outright exclusion of Non- Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institution (NASU) as part of the issue.

The statement demanded an increase in the retirement age of members from 60 years to 65 years.

“Government must look into cases of issuance of circulars and payment of allowances to deserving officers.”

The statement said that after negotiation on a number of issues, government said that it would not honour the collectively bargained issues, due to a threat from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

“This is provocative and unjust in a democracy, as we perceive this as industrial marginalisation,” it said.

The statement listed the Nigerian Union and Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria among others, as some of the unions that would join the strike.
