Harry, the Duke of Sussex, and Meghan his wife are expected to arrive Nigeria today for a three-day private visit expected to end on May 12.

The royal British couple is visiting on the invitation of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Christopher Musa. Their meeting will dwell mainly on the Invictus Games Harry founded in 2014 for wounded soldiers.

But Meghan is also expected to “dig deeper” into her discovery through a genealogy test that she is “43 per cent Nigerian” as she disclosed previously. In the build up to the visit, Nigerians – ever hospitable – are already hoisting a banner for her on social media, calling her “our sister”.

The Director of Sports at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis, said Harry will spend three days in Nigeria and will interact with wounded soldiers and their families.

The visit is expected to boost the morale of wounded soldiers in their recovery efforts, he enthused.

“Because we realised that 80 per cent of our soldiers have been involved in this recovery programme, they are getting better. Their outlook on life is positive. You know, when you are engaged in, you experience a permanent disability. Some issues affect the mental health and outlook to life,” Marquis explained.

“But the recovery programme has given them an opportunity to improve their personal self-esteem to improve their mental health, and their emotional intelligence has improved.

“Also, with their families seeing them, as they used to be the breadwinners who are capable of continuing living.”
