Gunmen attack Agunechemba facility in Anambra, kill one

Gunmen have carried out a deadly assault on a local vigilante facility in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, resulting in the death of one operative.
The targeted facility, reportedly operated by the Agunechemba Security Outfit—an initiative backed by the Anambra State government—came under attack in the early hours of Thursday. Umunze is considered one of the high-risk areas in the state, often targeted by gunmen believed to be operating from neighboring states.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, who arrived in large numbers, overwhelmed the security personnel on duty. They set five operational vehicles ablaze and partially torched the security office during the onslaught.
One operative sustained fatal injuries during the exchange of gunfire, while others reportedly fled the scene to avoid being killed.
The motive for the attack remains unknown. However, the Anambra State Police Command said it has launched a full investigation to uncover the identities of those responsible.
Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, urged members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, also condemned the attack and called for stronger collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local communities.
A police-led joint security team has since taken control of the area to restore order and pursue the attackers.
“Investigation is ongoing and further developments will be communicated as more information becomes available,” the police said.
