Groups disappointed on performance of Niger politicians

-

Different groups in Niger State are disappointed with what they described as poor performance of the current political leaders and lawmakers in the state.

They also passed a vote of no confidence on them while giving those aspiring to represent them at all levels conditions they must meet before being voted for in the next political dispensation.

These formed part of the resolutions after the various groups and interests took stock of the performances of the three Senators, nine House of Representatives members and 25 House of Assembly members that are representing the state.

The groups were unhappy that despite invitation, the lawmakers shunned the parley; thereby fueling speculations that it was deliberate to spite the populace.

During the Legislative Outreach and Citizens’ Engagement forum organised by the Community Action for Popular Participation (CAPP) which took place in Kontagora for Zone C, Bida for zone ‘A’ and Haske Hotels, Minna for zone B, participants were unanimous in their resolve that the present crop of politicians have not performed well to be voted for a second-term.

At Kontagora, the people said that their leaders at national, state and local governments had performed poorly and as a result they were reviewing their support for them.

They were unanimous in their resolve that it was no longer going to be business as usual for any politician wanting to represent them in any capacity as he or she must show prove of contributing in rural development before being considered.

A youth leader from Rijau, Bello Tukur, said that he was disappointed over the way they were being represented as no visible project on-going to convince the electorates for any of them to be voted for a second-term.

Tukur said, “The level of commitments and sacrifices made by any of the three Senators, nine House of Representative members and 25 House of Assembly members is going to be used as a yardstick for the re-election of these elected officials.

“All we are seeing today is a situation whereby virtually all the politicians representing us at the various levels only make themselves accessible to citizens during the electioneering but abandon them shortly after.

“We have been forgotten by the people we elected to represent us at all levels. The road from Kontagora to Rijau has turned to death traps, other social amenities have been in a state of dilapidation. All that they will tell is that the recession is also affecting them.

“We have taken our destiny in our own hands ahead of the 2019 election. We are not voting for just anybody because we have been abandoned for so long until we are fully convinced the person meant well for the people”.

Also, a member Wushishi Concerned Group, Comrade Bello Bashir, lamented that most of their representatives in the National and State House of Assemblies have never been seen to have moved a motion or sponsor any bill so far.

“We never elected these leaders to be dormant but to bring home to us our share of dividends of democracy”, another youth from Kontagora, Saidu Bawa, said as he added his voice in calling for the stringent conditions that would spur politicians to work for the people that voted for them.
