Following the worsening waste pollution situation around Surulere especially Ijesha market to Lawanson axis, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) as a matter of urgency identify and mark the entire route as black spot to be treated differently.
President of Statewide Waste and Environmental Education Foundation (SWEEP) Ambassador. Obuesi Phillips expressed this view after a short tour of the organisation’s Waste collection infrastructure around the area.
Amb. Obuesi Phillips called on LAWMA especially and the Ministry of Environment, Lagos State to join forces with the foundation to carry out massive waste and environmental education sensitizationand advocacy campaign.
He opined that in addition to the issue of waste policing, government must also carry out regular community wide sensitization activities along the route.
High cost of logistics especially fuel and diesel is now making it difficult for waste collectors to guarantee effective waste collection activities.
In this case, the government must help in subsidising waste collection, not only for the PSPs but also for those operating in the waste recycling value chain
