American actor Eric Dane, best known for his role as a plastic surgeon in the medical series ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, has passed away at age 53 after battling a nervous system disease.
His death was confirmed on Thursday by his family via a statement made available to CBS and other media outlets.
Last year, the California-born thespian disclosed that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS—the neurological disorder also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
While announcing his passing, his family said: “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed away on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS.”
The written statement further noted that he spent his final days surrounded by friends, his devoted wife, and his two daughters, Billie and Georgia, “who were the centre of his world.”
“He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and was forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he received,”it added.

Dane, who was born in San Francisco, made his TV debut in a 1991 episode of the series ‘Saved by the Bell’.
His breakout role in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ began in 2006, where he played the handsome surgeon Dr Mark Sloan.
He also played Jason Dean in the fantasy drama series ‘Charmed’, and Captain Tom Chandler in the action drama show ‘The Last Ship’.
He appeared in 139 episodes until 2021. He also featured in the HBO drama ‘Euphoria’.
