Rema (Divine Ikubor), 26, – the new kid song writer, singer and rapper – has again given kudos to his mom for her inspiration in his life backed with her prayers that propelled him to stardom from poverty, which made him to buy her at age 17 in 2015, the year he garnered his first million naira.
He disclosed his mother’s struggles led to him dropping out of university and drove him to pursue a music career.
Rema was speaking in an interview with Capital Xtra London where he recounted how his mother’s hardscrabble life, including the inability to afford the cost of transportation, motivated him to succeed.
“I was tired of my mom trekking every day; she didn’t even have money to transport [on] a bus or bike. So I had to take it to the next level ASAP,” he recounted.
“The moment I made money, I got her a car ASAP. We went for dinner, then I gave her that car. A lot of boys would go for their own cars first, [and] I was still trekking, but I had to get a car for my mom first.
“She’s a great mom. She’s the reason I’m successful. Her prayers. She’s really proud of me.”
In turn, Rema recently made $3 million (N4.5 million) in one day by singing just one of his popular songs at the wedding of Asia’s richest man’s son in India.
