Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has narrated how some politicians hailed former President Muhammadu Buhari during his administration and later disowned him after he left office, underscoring that sycophancy in politics is real.

He made this known on Saturday in Abuja while speaking at the 2nd Raymond Dokpesi Diamond Lecture organized by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.

According to Sule, by virtue of being a governor, he witnessed firsthand how politicians flattered the former president while in power, only to turn around and describe him as “one of the worst presidents” later.

While addressing the audience, he said, “By being a governor, I have seen what sycophancy can do. I have seen people actually sit in the presence of President (Muhammadu) Buhari to tell him, ‘Oh, you are the best ever. Nobody can do this better.’

“But the minute Buhari left government, they started saying, ‘Oh, he was one of the worst presidents we have ever seen.’

“These are the same people but different moments. That is what sycophancy is all about.”

Governor Sule went on to express admiration for the late media mogul, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, for his courage in establishing the country’s first private radio and television stations during the military era.

He added that it was an era when nearly everything was controlled by the government.

“We are here to celebrate an icon of the media. Dokpesi was not afraid to speak truth to power, even during difficult times,” Gov. Sule added.
