Residents of Millennium Citi Centre Estate (MCCE) Gbagada, Lagos have appealed to the Lagos State government to complete the embankment of the canal which was begun last year so that breaches do not cause flooding.
MCCE Residents’ Association Public Relations Officer, Sebastine Arinze, who made the plea on behalf of all residents, also urged the government to help provide transformer to improve electricity supply as well as good roads to facilitate movement for residents and visitors.
The estate, located by Westex bus stop, Gbagada has been in existence for years but has recently received a new look like many other estates in Lagos.
MCCE is surrounded by canals. The Ministry of Environment is building a bridge across one of the canals to solve draining problem.
The residents last year started the rehabilitation of roads and construction of drainage channels but have abandoned the projects due to a lack of funds.
“So far, with our own effort, we’ve done about 500 metres in the estate but it is a function of how we raise money. If we are able to raise more money, then we will do more.
“But the rains are here again and so even what we did half way before is going bad again. We had to stop work because of a lack of funds. We are appealing to the government to come to our aid and see to the completion,” he pleaded.
The residents applauded Governor Babatunde Fashola for his environmental re-engineering efforts and promised to give him their support, and also help the security agencies in policing, since security is the responsibility of all citizens.
“We are law abiding people and we are ready to work with the state government to transform the state. Lagos is the heart of Nigeria and we cannot afford to allow it to be in the grip of terrorists,” Arinze added.
