Gasset, Belmadi join Hughton in job hunting, as CAF confirms AFCON’s round of 16 games

Gasset was dismissed by hosts, Cote d’Ivoire midway through the tournament on Wednesday

Two more coaches have been sacked ahead of Round of 16 matches of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by their respective football federations. 

This follows the earlier sack of Chris Hughton, who took Ghana to the tournament by the country’s FA.

Hughton lost his job, following the early exit of the Black Stars in the group stages.

Ghana drew two games despite taking the lead in both encounters and lost to less fancied Cape Verde, who eventually topped their group, earning just 2 points. 

After his sack, hosts, Cote d’Ivoire also fired their French coach, Jean-Louis Gasset midway through the tournament on Wednesday.

Ironically, the Elephants eventually made it into the Round of 16, as one of the best third-placed teams. They will face Senegal next but Gasset will not be in charge.

Another coach who is out of job is Djamel Belmadi.

Algeria decided to part ways with Belmadi after they finished bottom of their group, despite boasting the likes of Riyad Mahrez , Ait-Nouri and Nabil Bentaleb.

Meanwhile, the 2023 AFCON Round of 16 fixtures have been confirmed.

This was done after the completion of all group matches on Wednesday night.

Three time champions, Nigeria will face another African giant,  Cameroon, Defending champions, Senegal tackle hosts, Cote d’Ivoire, while Morocco take on South Africa in the standout games.

The last 16 fixtures will begin on Saturday, January 27 and end Tuesday, January 30.
