Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has lashed at the federal government for allowing fraudulent officials to raise the prices of diesel, jet fuel and other petroleum products by manipulating the supply.

Saraki, in a video he uploaded on his Twitter handle, said it was unjustifiable for prices of products that were shipped into the country two months ago, to double and even triple.

He said: “There is no justification for the current price of diesel and jet fuel. These products, which were shipped two months ago should not have such absurd prices that are affecting the cost of living of all Nigerians.

“We’ve seen the price of diesel go up. We’ve seen prices of airfare go up as well. We’ve seen prices of food go up as well. Transportation has gone up. We have to really ask the question; how did the price of diesel go up from N300/N400 to N800/N900.”

Saraki, a presidential hopeful on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said the high prices of fuel products have affected the cost of living of Nigerians.

He said: “The cost of jet fuel has also gone up by double when those products must have been ordered, paid for, shipped clearly before the Russian and Ukraine war started. It doesn’t make sense. It’s just that some people are benefiting at the expense of Nigerians,” he said.

Saraki advised the government and those involved in the racketeering to ‘come down hard on this.’

He added: “There is no justification for this. There is no justification why the price of diesel today and jet fuel should be so high because those products definitely must have been shipped more than two months ago. Government must step in and defend Nigerians. People should not make money by racketeering at this moment in time. People are going through a lot of hardship and we must do something. We must confront this. It doesn’t make sense,” he said.
