Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his Enugu State counterpart, Peter Mbah have congratulated Nigeria’s senior women’s football team, the Super Falcons, after winning an historic 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.
In separate statements released on Saturday night, they praised the team for their dedication, resilience, and inspirational performance on the continental stage.
Nigeria after falling behind by two goals in the first half, staged a memorable comeback in Rabat in the second half, beating their Moroccan counterparts before their huge crowd of home fans to lift the WAFCON 2024 trophy courtesy of goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and Jennifer Echegini.
Speaking about the historic feat, Mrs Tinubu described the team’s 3-2 comeback victory as “remarkable and commendable”, noting that the achievement goes beyond winning a trophy; it symbolises the strength and spirit of the Nigerian woman.
She also expressed gratitude to God for what she termed a “sweet victory”, stating that the Super Falcons had once again lifted the pride of the nation and earned their place as the queens of African football.
“On behalf of Nigerian women and the entire nation, I thank you for making us proud. You have written your names in gold and inspired millions across the continent,” the First Lady added.
Also commenting on the win in a congratulatory message posted on his official Facebook page late Saturday night, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the team’s performance as “a flawless 10 out of 10,” lauding their skill, determination, and the immense pride they brought to the nation.
“Congratulations to our incredible Super Falcons on their well-deserved WAFCON victory,” the governor wrote. “This win is a reminder of what can happen when talent, discipline, and belief come together. To the players, coaches, and everyone who worked behind the scenes — thank you for making the country proud once again.”

Sanwo-Olu highlighted the significance of the win, describing it as a powerful statement on the strength and resilience of Nigerian football, particularly at a time when global interest in women’s sports is growing.
“You’ve shown the world the strength and spirit of Nigerian football, and I celebrate you wholeheartedly,” he further said.
On his part, Enugu State Governor
Peter Mbah, said the Super Falcons demonstrated the resilience of the Nigerian spirit.
Taking to his verified social media handle, @PNMbah, he wrote, “Congratulations, Super Falcons, on your well-deserved WAFCON 2025 triumph.
“Coming from two goals down to beat the Moroccans to the trophy underscores the resilience and invincibility of the Nigerian spirit and what we can achieve as a people by working together in oneness of mind.
“We are super proud of you.
“Again, congratulations, girls, and keep flying higher.”
