FG orders VCs to halt striking lecturers’ salaries

FG added that the directive will remain in force until the university teachers return to classrooms.

The Federal Government has directed vice-chancellors of all federal universities in Nigeria to commence enforcement of “no work, no pay” policy against lecturers in their institutions.

The directive was contained in a circular released on Monday and signed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had earlier directed its members to begin an industrial action on October 13, after government failed to meet their demands.

National President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Piwuna, while  briefing journalists stated that the warning strike “will be total and comprehensive.”

Reacting to the decision, FG instructed heads of federal universities to halt their pay in line with provisions of the Labour Laws.

“In line with the provisions of the Labour Laws of the Federation, the Federal Government reiterates its position on the enforcement of the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy in respect of any employee who fails to discharge his or her official duties during the period of strike action.” the circular read.

Those copied include the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Permanent Secretary of Education, Pro-Chancellors of all federal universities, the Accountant-General of the Federation, and the Executive Secretary of the NUC.
