The federal government has approved the dissolution of the governing council of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (NMU) Okerenkoko in Gbaramatu, Delta State.
Aside the nautical academy, the government has also approved the dissolution of government council of the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
This directive was contained in a statement on Thursday, signed by Ben Bem Goong, Director of Information Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja.
The statement from the Office of the Minister of Education,
Adamu Adamu, said the dissolution of the Governing Council of the two universities takes immediate effect.
“The Federal Government has approved the dissolution of the Governing Councils of the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, in Delta State.
“The Honourable Minister thanked members of the Governing Council for their service to the Institutions and wished them success in their future endeavours.”
The controversial maritime academy has come under series of criticism by the present administration , even as some ministers have called for the scrapping of the nautical school.
The Nigeria Maritime University was established by former President Goodluck Jonathan and was commissioned in 2014.
