Family loses four members in UNILORIN auto crash

UNILORIN became the scene of a tragedy that claimed five lives, including family of four – a couple and their two children

Four members of a family were said to have lost their lives in an auto crash on the campus of the University of Ilorin on Monday night.

Though the number of people who died in the accident has not been ascertained some reports said at least five corpses were recovered and that the corpses include those of the four family members.

The family members were said to be a couple and their two children who were all in the same vehicle

The accident was said to have involved a Lexus car and an 8-seater bus while drivers of the two vehicles reportedly died.
Some other people who were involved in the accident were said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries.

A statement signed by the president and public relations officer of UNILORIN university’s Students Union Government (SUG)Taofik Waliu Opeyemi and Olabode Stephen Opeyemi, respectively, said the accident happened “as a result of over-speeding of a private car which in turn hit a campus “korope” shuttle bus.

The students who noted that the accident claimed the lives of some people described the incident as unfortunate and commiserated with the bereaved families.

“‘We deeply commiserate with the families of the deceased persons and pray that God grants them the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses.

“Also, we wish the injured victims quick recovery as they receive treatment at the hospital.  Students should, however, note that academic activities are suspended for today,” the students’ union government said.

Meanwhile, the management of UNILORIN which also described the incident as unfortunate has condoled with the institution’s students over the loss of some of their colleagues in the accident while also commiserating with the parents of the deceased.

A statement by the university director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, said that the management received with sadness the news of the accident.

“The said accident resulted in some fatalities while some occupants of the cars involved also sustained varying degrees of injuries.

“We commiserate with the parents of the deceased and beseech Almighty God to comfort them in this trying period. We also condole with the entire student body of the University on the sad loss of their colleagues.

UNIOLRIN management also wishes the injured quick and total recovery. We hereby enjoin all vehicle users to strictly abide by traffic rules and regulations, especially as they concern speed limits,” the statement reads.
