Rivers State House of Assembly complex on Sunday night reportedly went up in flames after some suspected arsonists allegedly threw an explosive into the complex around 9:25 pm.

The incident came amid rumours of alleged moves by some lawmakers to impeach the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Reports making the rounds in some media outlets, not TheNiche, had suggested that arrangements had been concluded by some lawmakers in the state legislature to impeach the House Leader, Eddison Ehie, to pave the way for Fubara’s removal.

But Ehie according to a source in the house blocked the move aimed at removing the first term governor.

It took the quick intervention of men of the fire service to stop the inferno and prevent it from spreading to the entire Assembly complex

According to PUNCH, a senior police officer who pleaded anonymity confirmed the incident, claiming it was politically motivated.

“Yes, it is true. The fire occurred around 9:30pm or so. But as we speak, it (the fire) has been put out by firefighters who arrived at the scene just in time. I think it has to do with politics,” the officer stated

Meanwhile, over 17 security trucks and four Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC), have been stationed at the facility with over 50 Federal Security personnel mobilized at the complex.
