Former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, has said he was not in Kebbi State to hold political campaign when suspected thugs attacked the convoy.

The former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who is currently a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the clarification after the incident on Monday.

Confirming the attack, Malami alleged that some thugs armed with dangerous weapons and stones came from APC’s state headquarters in Kebbi and destroyed vehicles in his convoy.

He further said that he was in state solely to pay condolences to prominent individuals who had passed away during his absence.

He said, “It’s a painful act clearly linked to politics. Some thugs came out from the APC state headquarters armed with dangerous weapons and stones, attacking and destroying our convoy.

“The truth is, when it comes to politics in Kebbi State there is no retreat, no surrender.”

While reacting to the development, the Kebbi State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Isa Assalafy, condemned the incident and denied the party’s involvement in the attack.

“Kebbi is a peaceful state. No government that enjoys massive support from the people and is confident of victory in 2027 would want the peace of the state to be disrupted,”

He, however, alleged that the confrontation escalated after security personnel attached to Malami’s convoy opened fire.
