Even Tinubu’s wife, Remi, grouses against Ibos as being ungrateful in Lagos

By Jeph Ajobaju, Chief Copy Editor

Remi, a Senator and Pastor and the wife of Bola Tinubu, sees “Igbo people” as immigrants in Lagos and says they are ungrateful for being “accommodated”, a weird claim giving that both she and her husband are also not indigenes of the state.

“We will entreat all the deities of Lagos to chase Igbo people out. Igbo who didn’t marry Yoruba, we will inherit them. Given how much we love Igbo, you now want to spoil everything,” Remi said in video posted on social media, reported by The PUNCH.

“You are not the only tribe in this place, Hausa are here, we accommodate them, Calabar are here, we accommodate them. But Igbo are proving difficult. We will inherit you.

“Despite the love we have for you… others are here and we accommodated them.”

Remi is not more Lagosian than anyone else, let alone some Igbo whose parents were born in Nigeria’s most cosmopolitan state, the only one where tribalism does not play any major role in social mobility.

Bola and Remi not native Lagosians

Wikipedia says “she hails from Ogun State” where she attended secondary school. Meaning, Remi’s father was from Ogun. Because her cousin Tee Mac declared publicly in July that both their mothers are “Itsekiri” – meaning, from Delta.

As for her husband Bola, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), it is public knowledge his father was from Osun, a state still claimed by the son in his political manoeuvrings.

Bola was Lagos Governor for eight years, from 1999 to 2007. Remi has been a Senator since 2011 and currently serves a third term, representing Lagos Central in the National Assembly (NASS).

Reaction on Twitter

Twitter users have reacted to Remi’s incendiary post, most of them wondering why someone who claims to be a Pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) would use such tone and meaning to talk about other children of God.

Per The PUNCH, some of the views are collated below:

@BadmusAdeyemi12

“She was just joking in the video. She didn’t mean what she was saying. That could be seen in her gesture.”

@4eyedmonk

“…How can you say Remi Tinubu hates Igbo when in the same video she said, ‘Pelu ba she nife yin to,’ meaning, ‘considering how much we love you “Igbo?’”

@Nwafresh

“For the fact that Remi Tinubu is an ordained pastor in RCCG and still maintains her position after different hateful videos against the Igbo makes me understand why the Bible said that judgment will start from the house of God. Remi is an Antichrist.”

@drpenking

“Sometimes I wish RCCG were like Jehovah’s Witnesses. You can’t consistently bring the image of the church into disrepute. They’ll disfellowship you no matter who you are and they’ll shun you like a leper.

“Remi Tinubu has dealt with RCCG‘s image so much.”

@mavisikpeme

“So Remi Tinubu is really a pastor in RCCG? Those vile and hateful words cannot come from a servant of God. Must be a clone.”

@Oluomoofderby

“How on earth is Remi Tinubu a pastor in RCCG? I honestly don’t get it. In saner climes, she would have resigned from the senate and kicked out of her political party.”

Reaction from RCCG

RCCG Head of Media and Public Relations Olaitan Olubiyi said the church is not officially aware of the video, besides it does not ordain Pastors based on social media comments.

“We are not aware (of the video) and I’m sure Remi Tinubu was not speaking as a Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God,” Olubiyi told The PUNCH.

Reacting to comments questioning her ordination, he said: “I’m not in a position to answer that because the church knows what it considers before ordination and social media does not dictate to the church what the church should do. She has her life.”
