England’s qualification for the 2022 World cup in Qatar suffered a setback this evening after they were held to a  1-1 draw by the visiting Hungarians at Wembley Stadium.

The home team dominated proceedings from the beginning of the match but conceded a penalty when Luke Shaw brought down Loic Nego in the penalty box.

Roland Sallai stepped forward to convert the penalty in the 24th minute to give Hungary a surprise lead.

England stepped up their game after conceding the goal and got rewarded on the 37th minute when John Stones scored a tap-in after a poor clearance by a Hungarian defender, ending the first half 1-1.

The second half started with England still dominating possession,  but they were unable to break down the resolute rearguard of Hungary, who prevented them from getting shots on target.

Gareth Southgate brought in Bukayo Saka for Jack Grealish, Tammy Abraham for Harry Kane, and  Jordan Henderson for Raheem Sterling but their introduction did little to trouble the determined Hungarian side.

The center referee brought proceedings to an end after an additional 6 minutes could not separate the two sides, England stayed top of the group with 20 points while Hungary occupied the 4th position with 11 points.
