Eko DisCo hiked my electricity bill from N2.7m to N29m – Deputy gov Hamzat

Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has raised alarm over a shocking electricity bill hike from N2.7 million in March to N29 million in April by the utility company supplying power to his official residence.

Hamzat, speaking on Monday during a roundtable held in Victoria Island between the Lagos State Government and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), said his attempts to resolve the issue by purchasing a prepaid meter were unsuccessful due to bureaucratic delays.

“Last month, in my house, or the state house that I live in, the bill was N2.7m last month. This month, Eko DisCo sent us a bill of 29m. I sent it to the Commissioner for Energy. It’s crazy. I actually procured a meter. I bought a meter to say, ’Look, don’t give estimated billing. I bought the meter, but to convert it is wahala,” he lamented.

The deputy governor, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the event, condemned what he called “crazy billing,” citing a similar case where a resident in Coker Aguda, Surulere, received a power bill of N2.8 million—more than his annual rent of N2 million.

“Our people are suffering because of estimated billing,” Hamzat stressed, calling for urgent reforms to protect electricity consumers from excessive and arbitrary charges.

The roundtable was held to formalise a new partnership between the Lagos State Government and the REA to electrify underserved rural communities across the state using sustainable energy.

Commissioner for Energy, Biodun Ogunleye, praised the partnership, saying it will provide stable and reliable electricity to areas that have long been neglected.

REA Managing Director, Abba Aliyu, revealed that plans are underway to develop an 8-megawatt floating solar plant at the University of Lagos, pending state government approval, as part of broader efforts to expand energy access.
