Eguavoen says Peseiro will succeed as Super Eagles coach

Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Augustine Eguavoen, has revealed that he is prepared to back the new manager of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro to succeed if the NFF decides to appoint the Portuguese ahead of the 2022 World Cup play-offs against Ghana.

Recall that Eguavoen took the senior national team to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, where the team lost 1-0 to Tunisia.

However, in an interview with Sports journalists, Eguavoen stated that he will assist Peseiro map out strategies on to achieve the very best with the Super Eagles.

“He is coming to a foreign country,” Egoavoen, a former member of the Suoer Eagles that won 1994 AFCON said

“We’ve been on ground and we have to work closely. We will give him everything to make him succeed because it is country first.

“I will give him my report to study.

“I will tell him the background, the culture, how we operate here.

“Our philosophy and our style of football, and he will bring his own and we will look at it together and map out strategies for how we can make the country progress. Just to make sure we make him very comfortable and then he has nothing to worry about but just to grind out results.”

1. Jose Paseiro was born in Coruche, Portugal on April 4, 1960. He is now 61 years old.

2. He played as a forward for Portugal in his heyday.

3. The Portuguese retired at age 34 at the end of the 1993–94 season in the fourth division, with local club União de Santarém.

4. Peseiro assisted Carlos Queiroz at Real Madrid in 2003-04. He has managed Braga, Porto, Sporting CP, Al Ahly among other clubs.

5. He has managed two countries in his managerial time: Saudi Arabia in 2009–2011 and Venezuela in 2020-2021.

6. Among his laurels, he won the Egyptian Premier League with Al Ahly in 2015-16 and took Sporting CP to the 2005 UEFA Cup final.
