Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen,  has replied former Super Eagles captain, Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha, following his criticism of the employment of quota system in picking players to represent the National Team by the country’s football body.

Okocha, a Nigerian football legend, recently expressed his disapproval of the NFF quota system in a post he shared on his official social media handle.

While airing his views on the topic, the former Super Eagles captain who earned 73 caps said, “All I want is victory for the Super Eagles – To hell with the quota system.”

When asked about Okocha’s comments, he emphasized that the newly-appointed Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has the final say on team selections.

“Quota system or no quota system, Eric Chelle is in charge,” Eguavoen said on Brila FM’s ‘No Holds Barred with Ifeanyi Udeze.’

He added, “He (Chelle) has watched some local games, some international games, and has been following Nigerian football for a very long time.

“He knows where every player comes from, whether it’s Benin, Sevilla, or Spain.”

Eguavoen further emphasized that the NFF is willing to give Chelle the freedom to make his own decisions, regardless of the quota system. “If he says this is how he wants it, so be it.”
