Faisal had been on the run since 2020, following his arraignment by the EFCC on three counts related to money laundering.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Faisal, son of former Pension Reform Task Team chairman Abdulrasheed Maina, and transferred him to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Security sources quoted by The Punch said the arrest came after intelligence reports suggested that Faisal had quietly returned to Nigeria after years of being away.

“His arrest followed credible intelligence which indicated that Faisal had secretly returned to the country,” a source was quoted as saying.

According to the source, DSS operatives traced Faisal to Karsana, an area of Abuja, where he was apprehended before being handed over to the anti-graft agency.

Faisal had been on the run since 2020, following his arraignment by the EFCC on three counts related to money laundering.

In October 2021, the Federal High Court in Abuja found him guilty of money laundering and sentenced him to 14 years in prison.

The presiding judge, Justice Okon Abang, ruled that the prosecution had established that Faisal operated a fictitious account with United Bank for Africa (UBA), allegedly used by his father to launder N58.1 million.

According to the court, the funds were paid into an account bearing the name Alhaji Faisal Farm 2 and subsequently withdrawn by Faisal and his father between October 2013 and June 2019.

However, in November 2022, the Court of Appeal affirmed Faisal’s conviction but reduced his prison term from 14 years to seven years. The appellate court held that the maximum sentence should not have been imposed on a first-time offender.

His father, Abdulrasheed Maina, was also imprisoned over the laundering of pension funds. Following his release, he was later involved in further legal troubles.
