Momodu also compared Atiku to Trump, noting that the U.S. President secured a second term despite critics’ claims that he was too old to run.

Veteran journalist and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Dele Momodu has argued that if his party fields former Vice President Atiku Abubakar alongside a prominent Southern political figure, it would likely unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

Momodu made these remarks during a recent appearance as a guest on the Channels Television program, ‘Sunday Politics’.

According to Momodu, a ticket featuring Atiku and either Peter Obi or Rotimi Amaechi would significantly jeopardize the ruling party’s chances in the next election cycle.

“I am convinced that if we have a partnership involving Atiku, possibly with Peter Obi, perhaps with Rotimi Amaechi, or any other influential individual from the South, Tinubu will be defeated.

“This would mark the end of Tinubu’s political foundation, not necessarily the APC.” Momodu stated.

He further asserted that Atiku’s enduring political aspirations and experience make him a formidable candidate.

He compared the former Vice President to U.S. President Donald Trump, noting that Trump secured a second term despite critics claiming he was too old to run.

“Based on my assessment, Atiku Abubakar—even among those who previously opposed him—is now being viewed favorably; the enemy of your enemy is your friend,” Momodu explained.

“He has been preparing for this moment for a long time, much like Donald Trump. Critics claimed Trump was too old, yet he is now in his second term. It is quite ironic.”

He also expressed concern over the increasing trend of defections from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) since Tinubu took office, calling it a significant threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

Momodu characterized the current political migration as a “tragic day for democracy,” cautioning that the nation faces a perilous situation if the opposition is left with only a handful of governors to check the power of the ruling party.
