A police officer has been disarmed and locked up by his superiors in Ado Ekiti for allegedly killing a lady identified as IfeOluwa Adekalu with bullets from accidental discharge from his gun.
The tragic incident occurred at the Okela Police Station in the city on Thursday.
The police officer, yet to be named, was on a visit to the station and reportedly fired gun shots in jubilation when he received news of the promotion of a colleague. Some bullets hit and killed IfeOluwa.
There was, however, confusion over the exact location at the time of the shooting of the victim said to be a mother of one, per Leadership.
One source disclosed she was hit in front of a salon opposite the police station while returning from where she went to pay her accommodation rent.
Another source said the incident occurred when the woman came to the police station to see her husband who was in detention.
IfeOluwa was rushed to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to the injuries from the gunshots.
Ekiti Police Commissioner Adewale Adeniran, an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), confirmed the incident and said the officer has been disarmed and detained, and will face interrogation in line with the Nigerian Police Act.
Police detain husband who allegedly stabbed bishop to death over suspicion of sleeping with his wife
In another killing incident in neighbouring Osun, police have arrested and detained Wale Ogunsanmi, 43, who allegedly stabbed to death Shina Olaribigbe, bishop of Rapture Empowerment International, Osogbo, who was mediating in disagreements between the suspect and his wife.
The incident occurred at about 11:25pm on January 1 at the residence of Ogunsanmi’s estranged wife, where he reportedly found Olaribigbe.
Osun Police Command spokesperson Yemisi Opalola confirmed the arrest and provided details of the tragic event.
“We were informed that the pastor was at the woman’s house when the husband arrived,” Opalola narrated.
“The husband stabbed him several times, and he died. It is believed the husband acted on suspicion that the pastor was having an affair with his wife.”
According to the police, Ogunsanmi and his wife had been living apart for about a year due to marital disputes. Olaribigbe had been mediating in their conflicts before the separation.
The suspect allegedly broke into his wife’s residence and attacked Olaribigbe, who was reportedly in the bedroom in the house.
Police officers from Dugbe Division arrested Ogunsanmi at the scene, and recovered the weapon. Olaribigbe’s body has been deposited at the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital Mortuary for autopsy.
“The command is working to ensure justice is served,” Opalola said, adding that investigations are ongoing.
