Young Nigerians who sponsored the Not Too Young To run law are coming together to discuss governance in Nigeria as they host Convergence 2.0.
The two-day event brings together young lawmakers who have both won and lost elections to discuss the way forward for young Nigerians for who desire to lead in politics.
One of the conveners of the event, Hamzat Lawal, told TheNiche at an event in March that Convergence 2.0. is aimed at bringing young people that won or lost an election to a round table.
“We want to bring young people that lost the election. We want to bring young people that are used for political thuggery and have a conversation and say that we are going to use our own limited resources and tell the old politicians to keep quiet because you can’t keep complaining about young people and yet you are not investing in their education, in their well-being. You are not investing to enhance their capacity,” Lawal said.
Nollywood actor-turned-politician, Desmond Elliot, is at the event and said the reason he went into politics is that Nollywood under-represented in lawmaking.
Participants at the event will discuss the role of godfathers in modern day politics.
The event will also showcase those who benefited from the Not Too Young to Run law.
According to the organizers, the law has produced youngest lawmakers aged between 25 and 28-year-olds.
Current and past lawmakers in Nigeria are expected at the event.
