Canada edge South Africa 1-0 to become first nation to qualify for World Cup Round of 16

​Canada and South Africa finished second in their respective groups to book their places in the Round of 32.

​Hosts Canada defeated South Africa 1-0 in the first game of the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 to qualify for the next round of the competition, in a match played at the Los Angeles Stadium.

​Neither team had ever gone past the group stage of the tournament before meeting each other on Sunday.

​It looked as though the encounter was heading for a stalemate until Stephen Eustáquio produced the winning goal for Canada in the 92nd minute.

​Following the victory, Jesse Marsch’s side will now play the winner of the match between the Netherlands and Morocco in the last 16.
