CAN to tell Christians “at the fullness of time”

By Jeph Ajobaju, Chief Copy Editor

They “went to hire some unknown ‘bishops, pastors and priests’ to impersonate the leadership of CAN in their political meeting …. This is totally unacceptable, reprehensible, unprecedented and ungodly.

“These actions of theirs have shown who they are to the public and what they are capable of doing to us all.

“At the fullness of time, we will direct our members nationwide on how to use their Permanent Voters Cards come 2023” – CAN.

Righteous indignation continues over the audacity of Bola Tinubu for creating “Bishops” in his own image and lying to the public they are “Christians” supporting his Taliban Mujahideen with his Muslim presidential duet to dismember Nigeria.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has reiterated its opposition to Tinubu choosing Kashim Shettima, a fellow Muslim, to run with him for President because it is unjust and marginalises Christians in a plural society.

CAN General Secretary Joseph Daramola, in a second reaction on Thursday, repeated the claim that Tinubu did “hire some unknown ‘bishops, pastors and priests’ to impersonate the leadership of CAN” when he presented Shettima in Abuja on Wednesday.

CAN Vice President (19 Northern States and Abuja) Joseph Hayab had first sounded the alarm on Thursday that Tinubu “[hired] mechanics and other artisans and [sewed] clerical garments for them” to appear as fake Bishops at the event.

Tinubu countered in a statement that “the event was an open affair, which allowed members of the public to attend, including the clergymen and some others now being derided by hirelings of the opposition.

“We want to say that those clergymen were not fake, not mechanics or yam sellers as the purveyors of hatred have made Nigerians believe in the social media. They are not big names in Christendom yet, they are gradually building up their missions.”

Daramola, in the second take by CAN, stood his ground that politicians should “stop impersonating us” and insisted that Tinubu presented “unknown clerics” as church leaders and Bishops at the unveiling of Shettima.

Shock and disappointment at Tinubu’s desperation

“We are shocked, disappointed and worried about the desperation of some politicians who once claimed Christians do not matter in governance and politics but went to hire some unknown ‘bishops, pastors and priests’ to impersonate the leadership of CAN in their political meeting.”

“This is totally unacceptable, reprehensible, unprecedented and ungodly,” Daramola said in a statement, as reported by The PUNCH.

“If they are saying Christians have no electoral values, why impersonating them in their meetings? We are throwing their principals and sponsors into the court of conscience.

“These actions of theirs have shown who they are to the public and what they are capable of doing to us all.

“We are asking political parties not to ignore religious sensibilities and sensibilities of the people, especially in today’s Nigeria, when Christians are becoming endangered species daily.

“Our quest is within the constitutional requirements and ignoring it is like trampling on the Constitution especially the Federal Character Act.

“At the fullness of time, we will direct our members nationwide on how to use their Permanent Voters Cards come 2023.”
