Burna Boy wins Best African Act at AFRIMA

Burna Boy also won the Best Album of the Year, beating the likes of South African Kabza De Small, Ivorian Didi B and others to clinch the award

Nigerian artistes showed the country’s dominance in the music industry in Africa after winning a lot of awards at the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), which was held on Sunday at the 15,000-capacity Dakar Arena in Diamniadio, Senegal. 

Ace singer and Grammy award-winning Nigerian act, Damini Ogulu, better known as Burna Boy, once again proved that he’s truly the ‘African Giant’, as he won Best African Act at the 8th edition of the prestigious show.

The “Last Last” crooner also won the Best Album of Year, beating the likes of South African Kabza De Small, Ivorian Didi B among others to clinch the award.

However, the Ivorian singer, Didi B went home with the Song of the Year Award.

Burma Boy was not the only Nigerian singer who won awards on the night, Afrobeats global icons Davido and Wizkid also recorded wins. Davido won the Best Inspirational Song for ‘Stand Strong’ and Best African Pop for ‘High’ for his collaboration with Adekunle Gold. Wizkid took home the Best West African Act award.

Female Act in West Africa award went to Guinean singer, Manamba Kanye.

The awards night, which was held at the capital of Senegal climaxed the four days festival of music to celebrate African music superstars.

Music lovers at the glamorous event were also treated to performances from Ghana’s rapper Black Sherif, Psquare among other African music acts.

Meanwhile, Brymo who was nominated for an award at this year’s AFRIMA, has apologised after Nigerians petition the organisers of the show to disqualify him after considering his social media post about the Igbos a hate speech.
