Those clamoring for the zoning of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket to the South West, have been told to forget the idea for now.

The President, Muhammadu Buhari, says the party would determine on the issue of zoning, not individuals sitting in the comfort of their homes in Lagos.

A number of groups and individuals, including a cabinet member of Buhari’s government, Babatunde Fashola, have been arguing that the 2023 presidency should be zoned to the South, while the South West be compensated with the presidency for supporting Buhari’s two previous elections.

During an interview with Arise Television, Buhari said the caretaker committee of the APC, not individuals and groups would determine the zoning for the APC.

“I told the acting chairman and a committee to give me the report by the end of the month on the convention they are going to conduct and then arrange general elections until 2023. And we started this from bottom to the up, so that members of the party will be sure they are involved in decision making.

“Nobody is just going to sit in Lagos and tell them what to do. This is what we are arranging.”

A former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu, is believed to be interested in the presidential ticket of the APC, and pushing for the party’s zoning to the South where he holds sway as the most influential member of the party.
