Bruno Fernandes reveals he wanted to join Spurs

Fernandes also disclosed that he got angry after Sporting Lisbon rejected the bids made by PL side, Tottenham Hotspurs

Manchester United and Portuguese playmaker, Bruno Fernandes, has admitted he came close to joining Manchester United’s Premier League rivals, Tottenham Hotspurs

He also said he was angry at Sporting Lisbon’s hierarchywhen his move to the North London club, Tottenham Hotspur failed to go through.

The 28-year-old midfielder made these revelations while talking to The Athletic recently. 

Fernandes, after failing to sign for the North London club, eventually joined United from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 in a £67m move.

The Portugal international has since then gone on to make a significant impact at Old Trafford, scoring 37 goals and providing 26 assists in 93 appearances in all competitions.

According to Fernandes, however,  he could have joined Spurs, while  Mauricio Pochettino was in charge had Sporting Lisbon not rejected the bids for him.

He said, “Obviously I wanted to go to the Premier League. Their manager (Pochettino) was the one who wanted me there.

“It was a good offer, but Sporting Lisbon tried their best to keep me. The president (Frederico Varandas) spoke with me. But he spoke with me on the wrong day.

“It was the day after they made the decision to refuse the offer from Tottenham and I was really angry. Luckily for me, the manager (Marcel Keizer) was the right one at the right time,”
