Tinubu digs in, presents ₦1.481tr Rivers budget to NASS
By Emma Ogbuehi
The hope that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu may lift the state of emergency he imposed on Rivers State any time soon may be far-fetched if his actions are anything to go by.
On Thursday, rather than show signs of a retreat, Tinubu dug in by writing the National Assembly for the consideration and passage of the 2025 budget of the Rivers State Government.
Many analysts and constitutional lawyers have described the emergency rule particularly the suspension of all democratic institutions and appointment of a sole administrator illegal.
Nevertheless, the President, on Thursday, said the N1.481 trillion is being presented to the National Assembly in view of the nullification of the 2025 budget of the State by the Supreme Court and the fact that State is under emergency rule.
With the emergency rule, the Rivers Assembly is not in session and in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 constitution as amended, the National Assembly is expected to take over the legislative functions of the State Assembly.
Tinubu said that ₦324 billion of the amount will be expended on infrastructure, ₦166 billion for health, ₦75.6 billion for education and ₦31.4 for agriculture.
He said by the provisions of the budget, agriculture is expected to generate about 6000 jobs and appealed to the lawmakers to urgently pass for the budget for the good of the State.
