Supreme Court confirms fire incident at complex

By Emma Ogbuehi

The Supreme Court has confirmed the fire outbreak at its headquarters on Monday.

TheNiche had earlier reported that a section of the Supreme Court complex in the Three Arms Zone, Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was on fire this morning.

It was gathered that the incident, which affected about three offices, including that of Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, was caused by electrical fault.

The fire has reportedly been put off by the fire service officials stationed in the court.

Confirming the story, the court’s spokesman, Dr. Festus Akande, however, described the fire outbreak as a minor incident.

Akande said the fire incident has since been taken care of by staff.

“It was a minor incident which some of our staff promptly took care of with the aid of fire extinguisher,” he said.

However, a video of the fire incident posted by TheSerahIbrahim on X, formerly Twitter, puts a lie to Akande’s claims as the fire seemed huge to be easily contained by staff.

An eyewitness told TheNiche that the apex court does not want to create panic by downplaying the incident.

Many Nigerians were worried when the news broke.

They wondered whether it was sabotage considering that all eyes are now on the Supreme Court as it hears the appeals filed by the Presidential candidates of both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi.

Dissatisfied with the verdict of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) and determined to nullify the election of President Bola Tinubu, both the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, appealed the ruling at the Supreme Court.

While Atiku, on Tuesday last week, lodged 35 grounds of appeal before the Supreme Court, Obi on the other hand, Obi lodged over 50 grounds of appeal.
