Justice Adeola Olatubosun of the Chief Magistrates Court in Yaba, Lagos State, has reportedly adjourned the trial of Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, to Wednesday, May 24, 2023.

According to the Punch, the trial, which was slated for today, May 23, 2023, was said to have been adjourned as a result of the judge’s absence from the court.

There has not been an independent confirmation of the story by TheNiche. The PUNCH reported that when it reached out to Seun’s elder sister, Yeni Kuti, who is currently out of the country, she revealed that, as of the time of the report, she had no knowledge of the adjournment.

“I have no knowledge of the adjournment, his wife has not reached out to me today; she has not sent me an SMS to that effect; none of them has sent me a text yet. But I will call the wife now, you can call me back in 10 minutes,” Yeni reportedly said.

Seun, the son of legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti, was arrested for assaulting a police officer on the Third Mainland bridge on May 13, prompting the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to order his arrest.

Seun however turned himself in for interrogation the following Monday in the company of his lawyers and family representative and was arraigned at a Sabo, Yaba Chief Magistrate Court on Tuesday. The court granted him bail but ordered that the bail becomes effective 48 hours after to enable the police to conclude their investigation. He was, therefore, remanded in police custody.

The detention order was further extended for four days by the Court, at the instance of the police, to enable it conduct further investigation into the case.
