Bologna striker, Zirkzee expresses desire to don Super Eagles’ shirt

Zirkzee currently represents Netherlands U-21s, but he is eligible to play for the Super Eagles because his mother is a Nigerian

Serie A star, Joshua Zirkzee has indicated he would be willing to switch allegiance from Netherlands to Nigeria and play for the Super Eagles if the  opportunity arises.

The 22-year-old Bologna forward was born in the Netherlands to a Dutch father and a Nigerian mother, meaning
he is eligible to play for both countries at the senior level.

Zirkzee, who once played for Bundesliga giants, Bayern Munich currently represents his country of birth at the youth level.

He has played for the Netherlands U21s 19 times, registering seven goals and three assists.

Speaking to Algemeen Dagblad via soccernews recently on a possible  switch, Zirkzee acknowledged: “ Nigeria is not a country that you just choose because you cannot play for your homeland.” saying, ” the competition there for attackers is perhaps just as great as in the Dutch team.”

He added: “Nigeria has Boniface from Leverkusen and Osimhen from Napoli. And they have many more attackers.

“It’s not like I can think for a moment: The Netherlands is not calling, then I will choose Nigeria. Are they even pulling on me? Maybe.

“I’d be grateful if it did happen. If not, I have to make sure they call me. You hope to be there one day.”
