.Spends N100m monthly on security without results

Niger State Governor, Abubarkar Sani Bello, yesterday lamented what he termed the dangerous dimension to insecurity in Niger State and the country.

He blamed the trend partly to lack of working synergy between the various security agencies in the 36 states and the FCT, Abuja.

The governor also appealed for constitutional roles for traditional rulers and setting up of regional policing that would provide for professionals to police states and communities based on the peculiarity of security threats therein.

Besides, he lamented that despite spending  N100 million monthly on security yet criminals operate freely almost unchallenged in the state.

Bello said that  gradually he was losing confidence on the ability of security operatives to rise to the challenges of kidnapping, armed robbery, cattle rustling and murder.

“We spend a lot of money on security but we do not have a safe environment. In Niger State, we spend N100 million every month on security. I am sure that if we spend a fraction of that money on traditional rulers, we will get better results than what we have now to ensure that our communities are safe”.

Bello spoke when he granted audience to the Chairman, Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers and the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubarkar who led the eight Emirate Councils on the traditional Sallah homage.

He emphasized the need for adjustments from the normal policing to a more sophisticated policing to meet present day realities.
