For the three years a barber, Toheeb Shafiu, says he’s been married, life has been a living hell. On August 26, he dragged his wife, Fatimo, to the Ile-Tuntun Customary Court in Ibadan, seeking divorce.

He said the wife threatens him with machete since he got another lady pregnant.

The barber said: “I am better off living alone than dead. Fatimo has been after my life since I impregnated another girl that I dated before I married her. She has made attempts on my life with a machete. She attacked me on a number of occasions with broken bottles. I am not safe anymore living under the same roof with her. She destroyed my belongings and curses me at will,” he said.

While Fatimo says the marriage should not be dissolved, she did not, however, refute the allegations of threatening violence on her husband.

Her justification was that her husband was unfaithful.

“Shafiu lied to me that he was not seeing the woman he got pregnant. I later discovered that he kept her in his parent’s home. As a result, he came home only when he feels like. When I challenged him, he holds me in a choke hold and beats me,” she said.

The court president did not however dissolve the marriage, appealing to the couple to maintain peace. He, however, asked them to produce more evidence on the adjourned date of August 31, along with their relatives.
