Atiku, Saraki hail Super Falcons after edging past Australia

Atiku, on his Twitter handle, said the Super Falcons’ victory encapsulates what Nigerians can do when they work together

Former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer in the February 25, presidential election, Atiku Abubakar has praised the Super Falcons after they defeated co-host of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Australia.

The Nigerian girls on Thursday, defeated Australia 3-2 in front of their fans and a packed stadium in a second Group B game played at the Suncorp Stadium.

Emily van Egmond opened the scoring for the home side in the first half before Uchenna Kanu equalized for Nigeria before half-time.

Asisat Oshoala and Osinachi Ohale made the encounter safe for Nigeria after they scored in the 65th and 72nd minutes respectively.

Australia, however, got a consolation goal in additional time through Alanna Kennedy to earn a respectable scoreline. 

Reacting to the victory, Atiku, in a post on his Twitter handle, said the Super Falcons’ victory encapsulates what Nigerians can do as a people and country when they work together as one.

He tweeted: “Bravo, Super Falcons, @NGSuper_Falcons! Your remarkable victory brilliantly encapsulates what we can do as a people and a country when we work together as one.”

Also eulogising the Super Falcons is the former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, who said they gave a brilliant performance against the host nation.

Speaking via a tweet on his Twitter handle, the former Kwara State governor applauded Randy Waldrum’s side.

He wrote: “Well done, ladies! Brilliant performance against the host nation! We are now on top of the group! On to the next one!”

The Super Falcons now top Group B with four points ahead of Canada and Australia, they will be facing the Republic of Ireland, who are already out of the competition in their last group game next Monday.
