Appeal Court reaffirms Julius Abure as LP national chairman

By Jeffrey Agbo

The Court of Appeal in Abuja, on Friday, reaffirmed Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).

A three-member panel, led by Justice Hamma Barka, made the declaration in a judgment that relied on an earlier ruling delivered on November 13, 2024. The panel addressed two separate appeals concerning the leadership of the Labour Party.

In the first appeal, marked CA/ABJ/CA/1217/2024, Senator Nenadi Usman and others were appellants, while the Labour Party and others were respondents. In the second appeal, marked CA/ABJ/CV/1232/2024, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was the appellant, with the Labour Party as the respondent.

The appellate court previously ruled in favour of Abure in appeal number CA/ABJ/CV/1172/2024 on November 13, 2024, declaring him the legitimate National Chairman of the Labour Party. Justice Barka noted that the two appeals decided on Friday could not alter the leadership of the party, as the issue had already been resolved by the court.

Justice Barka further held that the suits emanated from an incompetent case, emphasising that the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite, lacked the jurisdiction to rule on the party’s leadership dispute.

The judge directed all parties and the public to respect the Court of Appeal’s judgment, which affirmed Abure’s position as the Labour Party’s National Chairman.
