Ani wins Ebonyi South Senatorial by-election, regains seat for APC

Ani won the election with 46,270 votes, defeating his closest rival, Ifeanyi Eleje of APGA who garnered 3,513

The All Progressives Party (APC) candidate in Saturday’s Ebonyi South Senatorial by-election, Prof. Anthony Ani, regained the seat for his party after he was declared the winner of the contest by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). 

The senatorial seat became vacant in August, 2023, when the state’s former governor, David Umahi, who occupied the position was made the Minister of Works by President Bola Tinubu.

Ani won with 46,270 votes, defeating his closest rival, Ifeanyi Eleje of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) who garnered 3,513.

Silas Onu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 2,783 votes, while Linus Okorie of the Labour Party (LP) scored 2,710 votes in the election.

The Returning Officer for the Ebonyi South Senatorial election, Eze Uchechukwu announced the result on Sunday in Afikpo Local Government Area of the state.

According to him, Ani, having met all the “requirements of the law, is declared the winner and is returned elected”.

Prior to declaring the winner of the contest, the returning officer had earlier disclosed that total votes of 56,363 were cast while rejected votes were 695
