The reopening of the Ikare Central Mosque on Tuesday marked a significant turning point in Ondo State’s religious and communal landscape, as Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa formally declared the facility open after years of dispute.

The event, which coincided with an Iftar gathering with Muslim faithful, symbolised reconciliation and renewed hope for peaceful coexistence among adherents of different faiths in the state.

Speaking at the ceremony, Aiyedatiwa described the development as a milestone made possible through the collective efforts of key stakeholders, including the Olukare of Ikare, the Grand Mufti and the Chief Imam, who is expected to lead prayers at the mosque.

He noted that the reopening goes beyond restoring a place of worship, stressing that it reflects the triumph of dialogue, understanding and unity over division.

The governor urged residents to embrace peace and mutual respect, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan, which he described as a period of reflection, compassion and spiritual renewal.

According to him, the significance of the moment is further deepened by the coincidence of Ramadan with the Christian Lenten season, which he said serves as a reminder of shared values among the state’s major religions.

Aiyedatiwa called on Muslims, Christians and adherents of other faiths to see diversity as a strength, warning against actions that could threaten the harmony necessary for sustainable development.

On governance, the governor reassured the Muslim community of inclusiveness, pledging that his administration would continue to carry all groups along in decision-making and development initiatives.

He also addressed concerns over civil service promotions, explaining that due process and seniority remain the guiding principles to ensure fairness and protect career progression within the system.

Touching on security, Aiyedatiwa acknowledged isolated cases of kidnapping but disclosed that scores of suspects had been arrested, while urging communities to remain vigilant and support security agencies.

The reopening of the Ikare Central Mosque, stakeholders noted, stands as a powerful symbol of unity and a renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence in Ondo State.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the Ondo Muslim Welfare Board, Alhaji Zikrullah Adam Chandy, commended the governor for organising the iftar, describing the gathering as a rare opportunity for Muslims to meet, dine, and engage directly with the governor and his cabinet.

In his lecture, Alhaji Sheikh Batuta Al-Adaby noted that while fasting and prayers are accepted by God, good conduct is more pleasing.

He emphasised that acts of worship causing discord are unacceptable and highlighted truthfulness, gratitude, and responsible leadership as essential virtues.

Chief Imam of Akure, Sheikh Abdulhaheem Yayi-Akorode, in his goodwill message, lauded the governor’s efforts but stressed that the Muslim community deserved greater consideration, particularly regarding the upcoming House of Assembly elections and the recent appointments of permanent secretaries, pointing out that qualified Muslims had been overlooked.
