Aiyedatiwa raises tertiary institutions’ subventions by 60%, approves FG-unions agreement

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has approved a 60 per cent increase in the monthly subventions to all state-owned tertiary institutions in the state, alongside the immediate implementation of the agreement reached between the Federal Government and university unions.

The two major interventions, according to the governor, are part of his administration’s efforts to strengthen tertiary education, improve workers’ welfare and create a conducive environment for teaching and learning across the state.

The approvals, which take effect from this month, are expected to boost the financial capacity of the institutions to meet their obligations, particularly in the areas of regular payment of salaries and other commitments.

In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, the increase in subventions was described as a deliberate measure to strengthen the institutions and improve the overall learning environment for students and staff.

Aiyedatiwa also approved the immediate implementation of the agreement reached between the Federal Government and unions of universities in all relevant state-owned tertiary institutions.

The implementation, the statement said, is aimed at addressing longstanding welfare concerns among academic and non-academic workers, boosting staff morale and ensuring that the institutions operate in line with prevailing national standards.

The governor directed the management of the affected institutions to ensure judicious utilisation of the increased subventions, with particular emphasis on staff welfare and academic excellence.

He also appealed to the various unions to reciprocate the gesture by maintaining industrial harmony and committing themselves to the delivery of quality education to students.

Aiyedatiwa said his administration remained committed to transforming Ondo State into a hub for quality tertiary education, stressing that his government would continue to take bold steps to strengthen the state’s educational institutions.

The latest intervention comes amid growing concerns over the financial sustainability of tertiary institutions and the welfare of workers in the sector, making the increased funding and implementation of the Federal Government-unions agreement significant for the institutions.

The governor’s administration has continued to place education and human capital development among its priorities, with the latest decisions expected to provide additional support for the effective running of state-owned tertiary institutions.

Adeniyan said the approvals took immediate effect from August 2026.
