National Director of Community Agenda for Peace Ambassador, Philip Obuesi has called on President Bola Tinubu to arrest the present hunger occasioned by high food prices in the country.
Obuesi in a press statement made available to TheNiche said, “We are sounding the alarm on the devastating poverty and hunger crisis gripping Nigeria. The situation has reached a boiling point, with over 50% of the population struggling to survive below the poverty line and millions facing starvation.
“The recent rice distribution is a mere Band-Aid on a bullet wound, failing to address the root causes of skyrocketing food prices and widespread hunger,” he said.
Amb.Obuesi said poverty and hunger crisis is a direct result of poor policy implementation summersaults. The lack of clear policy direction, inconsistent implementation, and failure to invest in critical sectors have led to soaring food prices, widespread unemployment, inadequate access to basic necessities like healthcare and education, increased inequality and social unrest.
He called on President Tinubu to take bold and decisive steps to declare a state of emergency and establish the Nigerian Youth Farmers Corps, a dedicated program harnessing the energy and potential of our youth to grow food for the nation.
This initiative He said, will provide employment opportunities and ensure a sustainable food supply.
“We recommend, Implementing policies to reduce food production and distribution costs, Investing in agricultural, infrastructure and technology, Supporting small-scale farmers and local food producers, Developing and executing a comprehensive plan to address poverty and hunger in Nigeria,” he said.
He added: “Mr. President, our citizens are crying out for help. It’s our collective responsibility to respond. We urge you to take immediate action to address this crisis and ensure our nation is fed and our people are prosperous.”
