Nollywood actress Mary Njoku has warned fellow women to prioritise their safety in the face of growing violence against, and victim-blaming of, women – citing the case of two friends, Celine Ndudim and Afiba Tandoh, who were allegedly lured into tragic death by a suspected organ harvester.
Njoku cautioned women against becoming victims like the two friends who recently went missing and were later found dead.
Ndudim and Tandoh, a Ghanaian, were reported missing after travelling from Port Harcourt to Abia State on April 27 to visit a man they met on Facebook. Their bodies were later found.
The man, who is suspected to be an organ harvester, has since been killed by the security forces while trying to evade arrest.
Njoku argued that when a woman becomes a victim even to the point of death, she will be blamed and made to feel it was her fault for suffering.
She advised women to avoid becoming victims in any situation, warning that if they lose their lives, it will be blamed on them. She described it as sad and stressed everyone needs to reset their minds.
“Dear Ladies Whatever you do, don’t ever be a victim in Nigeria. Cos, Your own don finish! Even if you die, ‘na your fault’ SAD We need to start doing better as a people! We need to reset our minds,” Njoku posted on Instagram.
“How do you know it was transactional sex [the two ladies went for]? Where is the proof? People find love online. Even some churches have dating sites.
“Or anywhere you see Nigerian girls with a guy, she is automatically a sex worker? Or is sex now the biggest crime in Nigeria? Let’s be humane Abeg.”
The tragic death of Celine and Afiba has sparked outrage and concern, with many Nigerians calling for greater action to protect women.
Njoku said she hopes her message will inspire women to be more vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid dangerous situations.
