A leading aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket for Rivers State, Magnus Abe, has withdrawn from the ongoing exercise, alleging it is skewed against him.

Abe sought the ticket of the APC in 2019 but was not the favourite of the former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, the de facto leader of the party in the state. The in-fighting led to the disqualification of the APC from participating in the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In the build-up to the 2023 election, Abe has again been shoved aside by the APC in Rivers in favour of a Lagos-based businessman, Tonye Cole, who is reportedly the anointed candidate of Amaechi.

Shortly before the commencement of the primary scheduled to hold at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, Abe announced his withdrawal from the contest through the South-South Coordinator of Bola Ahmed Tinubu Support Vanguard (BATS-V), Sir Tony Okocha.

The statement reads, “I have been receiving a myriad of calls from our colleagues concerning the Nation~Wide Assembly and Governorship Candidates Primaries of our darling party, APC.

“Please kindly take this as an official statement that we are not participating in an already skewed, biased, and prejudiced process in RIVERS.

“All our teeming supporters are advised not to dissipate scarce energies in a Process that will not pass muster. Comfortably lounge in houses and homes and be exceedingly happy, with no interest in the usual charade of APC RIvers.

“However, we enjoin ALL to remain vigilant as we continue to bring you up to speed with unfolding events.

“More than resolutely keep faith with the struggle. He who laughs last, laughs best.”
