Despite the adoption of President Goodluck Jonathan by the People Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum last month, the presidency has said that the race is still open to all interested contestants.
Professor Rufai Alkali, the Political Adviser to the president, said in a statement that though the endorsement was meant to strengthen democracy contrary to the impression of the opposition parties but it has not foreclosed other parties.
He however explained that the PDP resolved to encourage President Jonathan to contest the 2015 presidential election being a good product with sterling performances.
According to him, President Jonathan has always been favourably disposed to having a keen contest with candidates of other political parties next year and has been preparing well ahead of the contest.
Reacting to the barrage of criticisms trailing the adoption last month, especially from the lawmakers, Alkali said the parliamentarians should focus much on law making and support Mr. President in his transformation agenda rather than fighting the party.
He said what the PDP did was to affirm its maturity in political game based on its rich experience spanning 16 years.
He said the move has removed internal wrangling that usually occurs during primaries in political parties.
The presidential aide noted that all political parties at critical times deploy the option, most especially when the need arises for them to stay afloat.
“Looking critically at the turn of events in PDP, it is possible to say that the party, against all odds, has succeeded in demonstrating strength.
