Bashir El-Rufai, a political commentator and son of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has said that for the first time in his political career, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, is gaining momentum among core Northerners.
He made the claim about the former Vice President’s growing popularity in the region on Thursday in a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
Explaining the reason for the shift, he noted that Atiku is perceived as the most detribalised of all the main presidential candidates aspiring for the position in 2027.
Taking to his verified handle, Bashir wrote: “Atiku is gaining traction in the North. For the first time in his political career, he is being embraced by the core North, in part because of his mantra of being the most detribalised, historically, of the bunch.”

Earlier, the social media influencer had asserted that Atiku’s proposed fuel subsidy reinstatement is rattling the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government.
“That calculus could be the game-changer. They are rattled. This subsidy debate forged by Atiku forms a perfect narrative to the realities on the ground,” Bashir shared in an earlier post.
Speaking about his father in a much older post, he said: “When I visit my father, I always leave truly amazed by how it is we, on the outside, that are bothered. His resilience, uplifting spirit and usual banter hit in a profound way.
“I asked whether he still believes this sacrifice was worth it. Without hesitation, he said YES.”
