Jungle justice: You’ll face murder charges if you kill anyone, IGP Disu warns Nigerians

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Rilwan Disu has cautioned Nigerians against taking the law into their own hands, warning of the legal and constitutional consequences of such action.
He gave the warning in a video uploaded yesterday on the official X handle of the Nigeria Police Force, following the rising number of deaths linked to mob justice in various parts of the country.
The IGP described mob justice as a criminal act, stressing that such incidents would be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted by the Nigeria Police Force across all states. He also highlighted the human rights violations associated with mob justice, noting that it denies victims their fundamental rights to a fair hearing and to life.
He further referenced several incidents resulting in deaths from mob justice, including allegations of theft, kidnapping and many more, to corroborate his point. According to him, anyone who assaults or kills another person in the course of mob justice will face criminal prosecution and may be charged with murder or manslaughter, depending on the circumstances. He also warned that individuals who participate in or encourage such acts, including onlookers, could face charges of conspiracy.
He cited various sections of the Constitution to reinforce his point, emphasizing the legal and constitutional provisions against mob justice.
The IGP acknowledged the frustration that often drives people to take the law into their own hands, particularly with delays in the justice system and the rising rate of crime in the country. However, he called for reforms and lawful measures to address these challenges rather than resorting to assault, violence, or murder.
He assured Nigerians that the government is making efforts to speed up the justice process and address the factors contributing to the growing incidents of mob justice across the country.
